Financial Housekeeping: Stay Organized and Secure

As we approach year-end, it’s a great time to do some quick financial housekeeping. One key step is reviewing your existing accounts to ensure you know where all your funds are. Use this quick checklist to confirm you’ve accounted for everything:

Potential Account Types to Review:

  • Bank Accounts

    • CDs

    • Checking

    • Savings

  • Investments

    • Individual Accounts

    • Joint Accounts

  • Children’s Accounts

    • 529 Plans

    • Custodial Investment Accounts

  • Retirement Accounts

    • Employer Accounts: 401(k), 403(b), SEP IRA

    • IRAs: Traditional, Roth, SIMPLE

    • Annuities

  • Health Savings Account (HSA)

  • Life Insurance Policies

Why Review Your Accounts?

Recently, there have been reports of funds being fraudulently withdrawn from Fidelity accounts. In these cases, thieves followed a troubling pattern:

  1. Gained access to the victim’s account.

  2. Opened a joint account with the victim.

  3. Transferred funds from the victim’s individual or retirement account into the joint account.

  4. Withdrew the money from the joint account.

While technology has made opening accounts and transferring funds easier for legitimate users, it has also created opportunities for fraud. By reviewing your accounts, even once a year, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

How to Protect Yourself

Most financial institutions provide tools to monitor your accounts. Here’s a simple process to ensure everything is in order:

  1. Log In: Access your account through your financial custodian’s website or app.

  2. Check All Accounts: Review the list of accounts tied to your name and Social Security number. Verify that you recognize each one.

  3. Review Transactions: If you notice any unexpected changes in your account balance, check the Transactions or Account History tabs for details.

  4. Take Action: If anything looks suspicious, contact your financial institution immediately.

If you’re unsure how to navigate this process or feel uneasy doing it alone, I’m happy to help you step-by-step.
